This last collection of Roy McFadden's poems are presented as he ordered them. Last Poems is overwhelmingly elegiac in tone, and strikingly less guarded than McFadden's previous collections. It comprises a moving requiem for a craftsman of elegance and integrity, who was burdened by a duty to 'capture and immobilise / The transient moments' (Granny Bell') and small sufferings of his country's 'congregation of stopped mouths' ('Replaying Old Gramophone Records'). |
